GUIDE: HOW I CARE FOR LEATHER HANDBAGS
Outfit deets: Sweatershirt- Annie Bing, Handbag- here and dupe here
Fine leather bags are the largest investment pieces I own and they deserve to be treated with care. Sometimes my handbags start to look dull over a period of time and sometimes with the use. That is why I like to not only rotate my handbags, but is crucial to take proper care of them so I can enjoy them for as long as possible.
HERE’S HOW I PROTECT MY HANDBAGS IN 3 EASY STEPS:
CLEAN
Yes, I clean them every single week- if not every other day. Well this is going to change now due to COVID-19, I maybe cleaning my bag every night (you never know!). The principle is simple: remove germs if not dirt/build-up by wiping down with a cleaner made specifically for the leather.
[I’m not recommending anyone to try this, but I do sanitize my handbags (once a week, or after my travel)- TRY USING SANITIZERS AT YOUR OWN RISK.] And then I condition them to preserve the look.
I highly recommend this step- I give my bags a brisk sweep with a soft dry cloth—this won’t take more than a couple minutes, but will go miles towards preserving the appearance of your leather. Okay, this is no different than you moisturizing your skin or using a leave-in conditioner for your hair.
HERE IS HOW TO CONDITION HANDBAGS
I use this sealer from Amazon, and it comes with a microfiber towel. So, I just dab a dollop of Simple Coat Sealer on the towel and rub gently all over. Check my Instastories to see exactly how I do it.. I will try to SAVE in my highlights too!
Think of conditioning as moisturizer for your leather, which will dry out over time. But will prevent flaking and wrinkling of the bags. See the Before/After photos of my handbag..
HOW TO STORE
Stash my bag in its original dustbag and fill it with stuffing— I use a variety of things to stuff up my bags- boxes, gift tissue, small toss pillows (all depending on the size and shape of my bag), along with packets of silica gel so my bag doesn’t get damp. Air once every few weeks to halt the growth of mold.
Rotation is key- Everyday use of your bag will wear faster. I switch my handbag every couple weeks or latest once a month.
